Donald S. Lopez

Biography:
Donald S. Lopez, Jr. was educated at the University of Virginia, receiving a doctorate in Buddhist Studies in 1982. He is currently Carl W. Belser Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies and chair of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. Although Professor Lopez is an expert in most forms of Buddhism, he specializes in late Indian Mahayana Buddhism and in Tibetan Buddhism.

He is the author or editor of some twenty books, including Buddhism in Practice,
Curators of the Buddha: The Study of Buddhism Under Colonialism, Prisoners of Shangri-La: Tibetan Buddhism and the West, and The Story of Buddhism. He has also served as editor of the Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies. In 2000 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The center is committed to promoting a broader and deeper understanding of Southeast Asia and its peoples, cultures, and historiesby providing resources for faculty, students and the community to learn and disseminate knowledge about the region.
