Southeast Asia Summer Studies Institute (SEASSI)

This eight-week intensive language training program for students offers instruction in several Southeast Asian languages, including Burmese, Hmong, Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. SEASSI is able to make awards from U.S. Department of Education funds. In the past, these fellowships have paid tuition, fees, a stipend, and a partial travel allowance. SEASSI also awards fellowships for tuition only.

Eligibility
U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are or will be enrolled as graduate students in the SEASSI program at the host institution.

Application Procedures
Applications are available at the Center usually in November, and are submitted to the SEASSI host institution. Required materials include:

  • Application form
  • Language history form
  • FLAS information form
  • Statement of career and/or research plans
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended

While SEASSI makes awards, it always gives one fellowship to a member institution's highest ranked applicant. At the University of Michigan, this ranking is prepared by a Center fellowships committee.
